You may think that the major you choose in college will determine what you do with the rest of your life. Actually, college is all about discovering what you like and don’t like, what your strengths and weaknesses are.  It’s all about exploring options you never knew existed.

Both high schools and colleges have professionals on staff to hep you decide what you want to do with your life.  They can give you advice on the best colleges or help steer you in the right direction regarding your future career decision. Taking on a part-time job can also help you decide what kind of job and work environment works best for you, too. If your high school offers a co-op program or internship opportunities, those are great ways to explore some of the options that are out there. They also give you a chance to talk to people in the workforce about different kinds of jobs and what they involve.

It can also help to take a career assessment test. These guide you through a series of questions and, based on your answers, identify careers that best match your personality.

A few of the tests are listed here:

Some assessments take as little as five minutes to complete; others are a bit more extensive. Either way, you may uncover some information that gives you food for thought.

But remember: In the end, choosing a career is necessarily not about picking the job that pays the most. It’s about finding a career that pays you to do something you love. If you love what you’re doing, chances are, you’re going to be a success!
